About This Practice
At Starobin Counseling I provide therapy for adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I focus on helping people repair and strengthen their relationships. I regard relationships as central to the therapeutic process. Some challenges in life are purely personal, but most problems express themselves in the intersections people have with other people. Therapy helps people hear themselves think, experience feelings, gain new perspectives. When people learn to recognize and strengthen their own vitality and resiliency, they unlock their capacity for compassionate and meaningful connections. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and families living with autism. Participants in my PEERS® social skills groups learn and practice relationship skills with their peers and family members. Parents Together is a parent support group offered at Starobin Counseling. This group offers parents of children, adolescents, and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) opportunities to enhance coping skills and gain insight and understanding of the emotional impact of ASD, time to develop supportive relationships and share resources with other parents, and aims to strengthen the capacity of families to navigate the emotional and practical challenges of raising children on the spectrum. In individual & family counseling for people with autism individuals learn relationship skills and tools for thinking with greater flexibility, and family members learn to interact with greater ease and compassion. Training in Stuctural Family Therapy and cultural competence early in my career and more recently in the Post-Graduate Program at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Washington, D.C provide a foundation for my work with clients.
