Ottar Ness, PhD

Ottar Ness, PhD, family therapist, is Professor of Counselling at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Adjunct Professor of Mental Health Care at the University of South-Eastern Norway. He is also senior advisor for the Norwegian National Competence Centre for Mental Health Care. He has been working as family therapist in the Norwegian Family Therapy Agencies. He earned his PhD in family therapy from the Taos Institute and Tilburg University (the Netherlands). In his clinical work, he draws from narrative approaches, discursive therapies and recovery-oriented practices. He is especially interested in relational welfare and social justice for politically and socially marginalized persons. He as edited the “Norwegian clinical handbook of couples therapy” (2017) and co-edited the “Norwegian clinical handbook of family therapy” (2019), co-edited “Action Research in a Relational perspective” (Routledge, 2019), and co-edited “Beyond the Therapeutic State” (Routledge, 2020). He has written numerous articles in the fields of mental health and substance use recovery and family therapy. He was visiting professor at Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health in 2018. He is a Taos Institute Associate.
AFTA has always been a source for inspiration for me. Always, when I have been searching for theory, practice and interesting family therapists and researchers I have looked into the AFTA-community. I am impressed by the history and achievements of AFTA! Thus, AFTA has always enhanced my practice and research projects. I am deeply impressed and grateful for the work all people in AFTA has been, and are doing, for the social justice for families, individuals and communities. I have deeply respect for the innovative and inspiring work that you are doing! I am so grateful and feel that I am very privileged to be amongst such a courageous and innovative group of people! I am so honored and humbled to be chosen as this year´s recipient of the AFTA early career award.
